PDF/A-1a requires the source document to have proper heading structure and alt text for images. Documents created from unstructured sources (scanned PDFs, flat exported files) typically cannot achieve PDF/A-1a compliance. Use PDF/A-1a only when specifically required by the receiving institution.

PDF/A-2 (ISO 19005-2) extends PDF/A-1 to support JPEG 2000 compression, optional digital signatures, and transparency. PDF/A-3 (ISO 19005-3) is identical to PDF/A-2 but additionally permits embedding of arbitrary file attachments (including non-PDF files) within the archival document.
